BROADURO
Broaduro had its origins in type explorations based on cigar branding from the Caribbean region, from Santo Domingo to Havana to Miami. Oddly, none of it felt right until I decided on an Art Deco direction, and based new sketches on the typeface Broadway, designed by Morris Fuller Benton (born in Milwaukee, a long way from the tropics). If Broadway seems like an odd choice, just look up the Miami Vice logo. What I ended up with was a Latin-flavored take on Broadway, a sort of calligraphic Art Deco design. Outline, inset, and engraved stroke layers were incorporated as a reference to the cigar box and cigar label influences that inspired the project in the first place.
